A Musical Interlude for the Written Word

Below is a lovely trailer made by my colleague Jen Perrson from The View From Here for my good friend Paul Burman’s book The Snowing and Greening of Thomas Passmore which I reviewed late in 2008. Paul is with independent publisher PaperBooks which is part of the Legend Press group.  As I’m sure many of you are aware, it’s a long, hard process to be published and even when you are in print bringing your work to the masses is no mean feat; especially when the independents have to compete against the might of the mainstream publishers. So I’ve no doubt Paul was absolutely thrilled to see Jen come up with such a delightful trailer which, I think, captures really well the essence of the book. Have a look and see what you think!

Well done Jen! What a lovely gift for Paul!

Paul’s second novel The Grease Monkey’s Tale is due to be published in June and I hope to be giving you a full review later in the year. In the meantime, when I’ve caught up on some outstanding blogs, including a recent trip into London, I will be giving a run down on some of the books I’ve read over the last few months.

See ya all soon!

A to Z: B is for Badass Brits.

Now, when I think of Badass Brits, I think of the likes of Jason Statham and Vinny Jones. Men with humble, working-class backgrounds who’ve made good and have a reputation as hard men in films. The kind of men who, 100 years ago, might have worked 12-hour shifts down the mines and still come home and dug the garden over.       Not like our present PM, Keir Starmer, who keeps trying to pass himself off as the son

A to Z: Age is for Ageism

So, I reckon we should start off the A to Z with a rant on ageism and generally being old (read f***** over for the less sensitive amongst you.)   I know it’s hard to believe, but I started writing this blog in 2007 when I was 42. This makes me a dinosaur amongst the blogging community (i.e., I’m verging on the extinct), and last month, I turned 60.   Now, I know the kinder amongst you will be saying, “How

New Website

After 18 years on another CMS, I have moved my blog to a more versatile platform. However, it will take some time while I perform some jiggery-pokery to get it exactly how I want it. So please bear with me as things fall off the page, are posted upside down and so on. It has also beome apparent that I will have to edit hundreds of posts as importing them has screwed up all the post layouts, especially paragraphs. This

A Chicken Nugget A Day Keeps Justice Away

I have been forced. Yes, forced to come out of blog hibernation to comment on the latest scandal to hit the UK. God knows I have been tempted multiple times in the last few years to comment on some of the insane things happening in the UK and in the world, but sadly, life has just thrown too many curve balls at me. But today, I can take no more – I cannot keep my mouth shut any longer over

My Nominees for the US and UK Elections and Other Waffle

It’s the early hours of the morning, and I have had a large gin… Late-night alcohol is always a good recipe for writing gibberish. And I have not written gibberish for a while on my blog as I have been busy writing gibberish for my MA in Comedy Writing. Which I recently passed with a distinction. Yay! Yes, it transpires that even academics can be fooled into thinking gibberish is genius. Excellent. So anyway, I have written two sitcoms, a

Less is More (well that’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it)

I’ve been practising my haikus, which you may recall, I’m not particularly good at. However, I wanted to address the woke issue in a concise, meaningful way as it is such a serious matter for discussion and particularly relevant to me as a comic writer. Which, if you know me,  translates as: 1) I’m too lazy to write a long analytical post. And 2) I’d rather watch a movie and eat tortilla chips. However, I feel obliged to say my

  1. Ha! I went back to read your first post on this book, and amazing as it was, the thing that made me actually LOL was this reply to one of the comments on that post:
"Now Mr I (cough, cough) I hate to tell you but I changed the colour deliberately to go with the book! But I rather like it, so I think I'm going to stick with it for a quite a while. I like green – it's meant to be a restful colour…maybe it's because it's the colour of nature. My blog was a lighter green some time back but I think I prefer the darker one. What do you think? I'm not really a Barbie kind of girl so pink is out….."
So, is my monitor 'out of whack' or is your background not pink now? (I quite like pink, so it's fine with me, of course…)

  2. Lawyer Mom, Yep, it's a great little advert. Everyone's tastes in books are different but my book club read this one and we all agreed it was very good – normally we're at each other throats:)

Hello, Carolina and welcome to My Witty Ways.

Ah yes! The colour of my blog has changed numerous times since 2008- I get bored easily:) Now that's a not a porker I told; I'm definately not a Barbie Girl! However, I think I've been through most colours so there wasn't much choice left! On this blog design I think there was a choice of beige, brown and pink..the brown is on my About Me page – I think I prefer the brown myself but pink is more feminine and I don't want everyone to think I'm a carthorse:))

The Snowing and Greening is definately available on Amazon UK and they will dispatch to the USA as I've ordered products and had them sent abroad via Amazon myself. The postage I recall for what I'd ordered seemed reasonable to me:)

  3. Sue – I've started to come across them only in the last year or so. I'm usually a bit slow on the uptake so I guess they've been around a while longer. They are now appearing on Amazon below the book details on a few high profile books – I recently saw one for the latest novel from author David Mitchell.
